January 9-14: Seven Ply
Work by 18 local and international artists
TruSpace Gallery
Seven Ply is a group exhibition, curated by Will Penny, of customized skateboard decks created by 18 local and international artists. Each artist was given between one and three decks to be used as a blank canvas however they saw fit. No theme or title was given, and so each artist was left to confront the seven layers of shaped plywood with complete freedom. The pervasive effect that the skateboarding culture has had on the aesthetic sensibility of this generation is inescapable, and this exhibition celebrates the uninhibited freedoms that both art and skateboarding share.
The show will run January 9-14. The opening reception will be on Friday, January 9, 6pm-9pm, with musical performances by An Intricate Part of a Beautiful Machine and DJ Pre Teen Mackerel.
