SGC/Philagrafika

The last weekend in March, Kay and I took a long weekend in Philadelphia to check out this year's Southern Graphics Council Printmaking Conference and Philagrafika. Philadelphia was fantastic, and here are some photos from the weekend:

Shortly after breakfast Friday we caught up with our Atlanta comrades, Jay & Molly

We visited the Fabric Workshop Museum, where we just missed their exhibition by Chinese artist Cai Guo-Aing. We poked around the museum, but were disappointed to discover that you needed an appointment to see the actual workspace and printing area. Maybe next time...

We ventured down the street to check out the notorious Space 1026. We arrived too late the night before to catch the opening of this show, but we looked around the gallery while they cleaned up (note the keg still out the morning after...)

Not only did I get to examine a piece by one of my favorite Philly-based artists, Alex Lukas, but he was also exhibiting his fantastic and meticulous process work:

We explored some more and made our way to Art in the Age (sorry no picture), and had lunch at a great hole-in-the-wall restaurant called Honey's, recommended to us by the kind folks at ArtStar

...complete with delicious milkshakes!

We walked around some more, visited the Fabric Horse storefront, Letter press shop pre55ed, and caught a great exhibition by fellow SCAD alum, Hilary White at the Toothless Cat gallery. From there we saw a panel discussion and some more printwork at Tyler School of Art, and snooped around their Printmaking studios. From there we caught a shuttle back and headed to Moore College of Art and Design...

They had a wonderful installation by Regina Silviera, but before we entered we had to put these little shoe covers on...

Another great installation, this one with mirrored walls and skull motifs by Virgil Marti

Out side of Moore was this awesome raptor sculpture (dad, this ones for you) - I'll always be a sucker for dinosaurs.

Caught another shuttle out to the Crane Arts building, which was just overflowing with incredible work. Far too much for me to photograph, but here are a few, starting with this mind-melding cut paper piece. Wish I had caught the name of the artist.

Letterpress jams

Outside the Crane Arts Building was the oh-so-epic Printmaking Viking ship. Quite a site to see, and put together by several great Printmakers, including the always impressive Sean Starwars.

From there we caught up with Shawn of Masthead Print Studios, and had a great Friday night out in Philly (complete with cheese steak and local brews - not pictured)...

Started the next morning with an incredible breakfast at the retro-styled Continental restaurant before heading to the SGC open portfolio session.

Took a break from the hustle and bustle of the portfolio review to grab lunch and a mid-day dessert. Who can resist a plaid, peanut butter cupcake? ...not us.

...and then there was Yurt. This great yurt-like structure was put together by the folks over at 1026.

Better late than never

I cannot believe that it has taken me this long to post this, but back in November Desoto Row gallery wrote up a review of my solo show, "Distractions & Reminders."
